The common prefabricated home has a distinct appearance. A long rectangular body, a pitched roof, easy to transport by truck bed when split in half—these characteristics are almost universal when it comes to prefab design. Dwell, in partnership with Turkel Design, is changing that. The two firms have recently released their “Axiom Series,” a line of modern houses that combine sleek modern design with all the benefits of prefabricated construction.
Joel Turkel, the co-founder of Turkel Design, says that “Dwell’s mission of making good design accessible to a broad audience is closely related to our own… Prefab holds the promise to do this, and the Axiom Series homes represent the best possible use of prefab.” The design for the houses comes from over 20 years of research and practice, and incorporate many adaptations to improve efficiency.
Axiom homes include passive heating and cooling techniques, high insulation levels, and an extremely airtight building envelope. The design minimizes site disturbance during installation, and is flexible enough to fit zoning codes. Owners may review the features in their home online before having it shipped to them. Turkel claims that the process is “redefining the relationship between architect and homeowner… Prefabrication and our systemized delivery methods allow us to offer an unmatched level of predictability in material quality, attention to detail, and price control.”
